Psycho Hose Beasts*

yet another blog entry about ordinary things that are fraught with danger. to you this looks like your everyday-run-of-the-mill sprinkler, but trust me...in all reality it is a mean-spirited and malicious garden tool. i mean...look at the jaws on this thing! i will explain...
last year our automatic sprinkler system went ka-plooey! and let me say right here and now, that our sprinkler system was a little gem. granted there would be the occasional busted sprinkler head, but for the most part it was a trooper...coming on at 4 a.m. and thoroughly watering the lawn with very little concrete overspray. nice! well, the timer died then we had a major main valve leak...which requires a three-foot-deep hole dug in wet clay soil in the middle of the lawn, a licensed plumber and who knows what else they'll find down there! (the idea of which racks my very soul!)...so i hauled the hose and sprinkler around last summer and i'm doing it again this summer.
in case you didn't realize, finding the perfect sprinkler and the perfect sprinkler position is a science! you've gotta get the most lawn coverage with the least amount of movement. and the one thing i've learned this past hose-hauling year is that these hose-end sprinklers are vengeful little buggers!
no matter where i place them or how i set them or where i stand...they seek me out and douse me! i'll sneak up from behind them and suddenly the sprinkler goes all psycho and spins its head around and soaks me from head to toe. i'll even wrestle the hose and sprinkler to the ground, grabbing the dangerous end - "the viperous head" - and it will still manage, one way or another, to spray me!
and i ask you...what did i ever do to deserve such treatment? just because i showed a little favoritism to the Rainbird's half-brother, "Pop-up sprinkler head"? is that any reason for a sprinkler to hold a grudge?

*Sweetie and The Kiddies will get a guffaw out of this title. it comes from a name that Daughter #2 invented for some people we knew several years...which described them pretty well. nope...don't ask...i WON'T tell who!
