the slightly creepy side of Christmas

so...Halloween is supposed to be the "creepy" holiday...but just visit your local mall Santa and watch the toddlers screaming as their parents seat them on the Big Guy's lap...and you'll know there's a creepy side to Christmas too!
first of all...a subarctic woodland creature with a blinking red nose! Honestly...can you say "nuclear mutation"? plus the thing flies! Yikes!
I also have to add The Abominable! While he's not really a traditional Yuletide character per se, he is at our house (we happen to love Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer...the cartoon!..."I want to be a dentist!") I got an Abominable that roars and sings and dances. Grandson #1 thought it was adorable the first two times he played with it...then he started to whimper in terror every time he saw it! Grandson #2 turned it on yesterday, danced awhile then started giving it sideways glances! Star or not...The Bumble is a little scary!
and then there's the Big Guy...Mr S.C....the Guy in the Red Suit! (the Santa above was created by Son #1 in grade school-long ago!) We tell our kids all year not to talk to strangers, then come December we plop them down on this weird guy's lap, smile about it and even take pictures! Add in that sneaks in your house at night and wears totally whacko-jacko clothes...and has this huge beard that almost completely covers his face and he lives far, far away from civilization (all the better to hide from the authorities??!) No wonder the sound of children screaming mixes with Jingle Bells at the mall!
The best thing though, is that no matter how creepy these Christmas characters look individually, when you mix them up with magic and the Christmas Spirit...they don't seem half-bad!
